After hours of contentious debate, the Texas House early Thursday morning voted 85-63, largely along party lines, to pass a sweeping school voucher bill.

The controversial Senate Bill 2 would set up a $1 billion voucher program backed by Gov. Greg Abbott, who trumpeted the legislation’s passage a win for Texas parents. However, opponents argue that scheme will drain already underfunded public schools of money to help subsidize private school tuitions for wealthy Texans.

Of the seven lawmakers representing Bexar County in the House, all four Democrats voted against SB 2. All three of the delegation’s Republicans voted in favor. Here’s how it broke down:

  • Trey Martinez Fischer, D-San Antonio, District 116 | SB 2: No
  • Philip Cortez, D-San Antonio, District 117 | SB 2: No
  • John Lujan, R-San Antonio, District 118 | SB 2: Yes
  • Elizabeth Campos, D-San Antonio, District 119 | SB 2: No
  • Barbara Gervin-Hawkins, D-San Antonio, District 120 | SB 2: No
  • Marc LaHood, R-San Antonio, District 121 | SB 2: Yes
  • Mark Dorazio, R-San Antonio, District 122, | SB 2: Yes

Worthy of note, LaHood was elected last election cycle after he defeated former GOP State Rep. Steve Allison in a hotly contested primary.

Allison was one of multiple House Republicans that Abbott targeted for removal after they voted against his voucher proposal during the 2023 legislative session. The governor made several San Antonio appearances to promote LaHood’s candidacy and pumped $700,000 into his campaign.
