Former gubernatorial, presidential and U.S. Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke and his Powered by People political action committee will visit a UTSA-area hangout this Thursday to register students to vote. And he’s offering free beer to sweeten the deal.
The stop is part of the former Democratic congressman’s ongoing “Every Campus Counts” college tour, which he organized to get young people involved in progressive politics.
Thursday’s event will run 6-9 p.m. at The Block, 14530 Roadrunner Way. The first 200 in attendance will receive a free beer or soda, and brews will sell for $1 a pop after that.
The event also will include performances by bilingual indie-pop singer Zelaiah and pop-punk band Honey Bunny, both of whom are San Antonio-based. Those interested in attending can RSVP by visiting Powered by People’s website.
O’Rourke’s San Antonio appearance comes as Democrats are optimistic heading into a November contest where the GOP faces serious headwinds — even in deep-red Texas.
Both Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico and Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Gina Hinojosa have either been statistically tied with or led their Republican opponents in recent polls.
But as O’Rourke — who’s lost the last three elections in which he’s run — knows all too well, it ain’t over until it’s over.
