The San Antonio Current, in conjunction with American Banker magazine, has won the Central Region Gold Award for Enterprise News Story in the annual Azbee Awards of Excellence, a top contest recognizing business, economic and trade journalism.
The Current and American Banker won the award for the story ‘Fundamental breakdown’: How USAA landed in regulators’ hot seat, co-written by Current Editor-in-Chief Sanford Nowlin and American Banker Staff Writer Polo Rocha.
The investigative piece, which ran simultaneously in the Current and American Banker, chronicles how USAA, one of San Antonio’s largest and most-respected employers, encountered problems with both regulators and customers after failing to make the needed investments in its banking unit, even as its business rapidly expanded. USAA provides insurance and financial services to military members, veterans and their families.
The American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) holds the Azbees to “celebrate the highest quality reporting, editing and design” in media outlets covering business and trade-related news. The highly competitive awards cover all types of publications, including magazines, newspapers, websites and more.
This the first time the Current’s work has been recognized in the Azbee Awards.
