San Antonio Independent School District’s Board of Trustees on Monday unanimously voted to raise pay for teachers, paraprofessionals and support staff.

First-year entry-level teachers’ salaries will now start at $60,000, while all full-time teaching staff now on the payroll will receive a 3% raise. Meanwhile, paraprofessionals, instructional assistants and transportation workers will get a 4% pay bump.

Board members said the raises are necessary to retain and recruit staff for the 2025-26 school year — even though the district is staring the term with a $51 million structural budget deficit.

“We cannot afford a compensation increase,” SAISD Superintendent Jaime Aquino said. “However, our staff also need to be able to cope with the 22% national inflation.”

On Monday, SAISD trustees also approved higher custodian pay, a $3,000 sign-on bonus for district police department staff and $500 one-time stipends for employees who have worked for the district for at least 15 years.
