This month, the City of San Antonio will roll out its “City Hall to All” pilot program, which brings City Council public comment sessions into neighborhoods.
Traditionally, public comment sessions, which allow residents to air grievances directly to council members, are held on Wednesdays at Council Chambers downtown.
However, District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez, District 5 Councilwoman Teri Castillo and District 9 Councilwoman Misty Spears filed a proposal last year calling for public comment to be held in their neighborhoods.
The first such remote meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Normoyle Senior Center, 700 Culberson Ave.
The next neighborhood public comment session will occur Wednesday, Dec. 16, at the Walker Ranch Senior Center. A Wednesday, Jan. 20, session is planned for the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex.
Although the public comment sessions are held in non-traditional settings, the same rules apply, Spears said in a social media video promoting the project.
“Council members will listen to public comments, but will not be able to respond or discuss comments during this session,” Spears said. “The format and rules remain the same as a typical public comment session, including advance sign-up.”
More information on the sessions, including how to sign up to speak, is available at the City of San Antonio website.
