A group of City Council members is calling for a special meeting next month to discuss the recent string of home explosions on the Northwest San Antonio.
The memo filed by District 5 Councilwoman Teri Castillo, District 7 Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito and District 10 Councilman Marc Whyte calls for a “comprehensive review” of emergency response coordination between first responders and city utility operators.
“While individual departments perform their designated functions, a lack of coordination and a clearly defined command and communication structure can create gaps in response effectiveness and public safety outcomes,” the trio wrote. “This session will provide an opportunity for City Council to examine existing coordination mechanisms, identify areas for improvement, and establish clear expectations for inter-agency collaboration during emergency situations.”
The call for a special meeting come after two homes exploded last week in the 1500 block of Preston Hollow, injuring five residents, including a child.
The cause of the blasts is still under investigation. In the meantime, Whyte — whose district includes the area where the incidents occurred — told News 4 SA that his office is working to secure gas detection devices for any household in the neighborhood that wants one.
“People want to know if they’re safe to be in their homes, and that’s a very, very real concern,” Whyte said.
