Bexar County Commissioners Court on Tuesday approved a request by Spurs Sports & Entertainment to allow the team to play one additional “home game” somewhere other than the Frost Bank Center.

The approval clears the Spurs to play four home games away from the county-owned Frost Bank Center each of the next two seasons. The NBA team’s previous agreement with the county allowed three such games.

Commissioners Court approved the measure on a 4-0 vote with Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Calvert abstaining.

“When we’re talking about such sizeable public investments, return and partnership have to be true partnership,” Calvert said during the meeting.

In the upcoming season, the Silver and Black are set to play two international games in France in addition to two games at Austin’s Moody Center — a tradition that started in 2023.

“As the Spurs continue to expand the brand internationally and throughout our region, the update to the non-relocation agreement allows the San Antonio brand to also grow alongside the Spurs,” outgoing Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai said in a statement. “We saw the fantastic brand impact for our community during their recent playoff run, and this change will enhance future opportunities for Bexar County.”

In online comments, some Spurs fans expressed skepticism about the team’s motives for increasing the number home of games played outside the county — especially in light of voters’ recent approval of more than $800 million in public financing for a new arena at Hemisfair.

SS&E spokesperson Liberty Swift, in a statement, argued the move is about broadening the team’s fanbase beyond Loop 1604.

“That flexibility supports our longstanding strategy of connecting Spurs fans across the region, including Austin, while also allowing us to participate in selected NBA international games,” she said.
