Former Bexar County Assistant District Attorney Jason Wolff on Tuesday said he’s considering a run to be the DA’s office, adding that he would do so as an independent if he formally launches a campaign.

In a broad conversation with the Current, Wolff — the nephew of former Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff — said that he’s fed up with the state of affairs at the DA’s office under Joe Gonzales, whom he called a “pussy” in a recent TikTok clip. Wolff also asserted that he’s the most qualified candidate by far to take Gonzales’ place.

“I’m disgusted with the state of the DA’s office,” Wolff said. “I’m disgusted with the training, or lack thereof, the lack of somebody taking their discretion and doing what they know is right rather than [worrying about] the blowback they’re going to get.”

Wolff’s tough talk comes as the DA’s office has taken a couple of recent black eyes.

Last week, the office dropped charges against Myrta Romanos, a San Antonio woman accused of helping her son hide the body of slain pregnant teen Savannah Soto. And this week, a jury acquitted three San Antonio police officers charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of Melissa Perez, an unarmed woman suffering a mental health crisis.

A seventh-generation San Antonian, Wolff earned his law degree from the University of Texas at Austin and has tried more than 260 cases to jury verdict. He’s also served as a judge on the Bexar County Court at Law 2 and currently specializes in criminal defense at the Calfas Law Group.

Wolff’s announcement comes the day after Alamo City defense attorney Shannon Locke and state Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, D-San Antonio, both said they’re forming exploratory committees for potential runs for DA.

Wolff said he’s “disappointed” Martinez Fischer is weighing a run, considering his what the criminal defense attorney called his lack of courtroom experience. Wolff added that he isn’t sure whether the lawmaker has the “stomach” for the “shit sandwich that it’s going to take to be an effective DA.”

“I don’t know that Trey has taken a look at the DA’s office,” Wolff said. “He hasn’t been inside the DA’s office, and he hasn’t been in a felony court room, and he really doesn’t know the state of the DA’s office right now. Why or how he thinks he can come in and clean it up? I don’t know.”

While Martinez Fischer is best know for his time in the Texas Lege, Locke and Wolff are both outspoken trial attorneys with large TikTok followings, where they put their brash opinions on public display.

If Locke or Wolff do decide to run, they would likely set the stage for a race heavily emphasizing social media and branding — something new for a Bexar County DA’s race.

“If I can go down swinging, I’m going to go down swinging — where I can be on the debate stage with both sides and let people figure out who the best candidate is,” Wolff said. “And, I can guarantee you that I am the best candidate, if I choose to run.”
