Texas Gov. Greg Abbott will speak Monday evening in support of school vouchers at a San Antonio private school. Anti-voucher protesters plan to meet him outside.
The Republican governor will appear at a dinner hosted by San Antonio Christian School, 19202 Redland Road, just north of Loop 1604. The event will take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Abbott was invited by the conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation for its Parent Empowerment Night, according to the event page. Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows and Public Education Chairman Brad Buckley, both Republicans, also will attend.
The governor is expected to speak in support of the school voucher program that he’s aggressively championed over the past two legislative sessions. The proposal earmarks taxpayer-funded subsidies for private schools.
Critics argue vouchers would poach students, and therefore tax dollars, from already struggling public schools. Further, the program would subsidize private school tuitions for the wealthy while gutting public education, they maintain.
During a speech earlier this month, Abbott listed school vouchers as an emergency item this session of the legislature. The Texas Senate has already passed a bill, although the legislation faces a less-certain future in the Texas House.
Voucher opponents plan to protest Monday’s event as the governor and guests arrive. Demonstrators representing Mothers for Democracy and the Bexar County Democratic Party will gather outside at 5 p.m.
“We can’t sit idle while Republicans defund public education and get rich off our kids!” the protest’s call-to-action reads.
