Taylor Farms, the grocery distributor linked to an outbreak of explosive diarrhea caused by contaminated lettuce, is recalling more products widely distributed in Texas and 25 other states.
Alarmingly, the new product recall is for foods that make up a big part of the Lone Star State diet.
Taylor Farms has recalled fresh jalapeños, salsas, guacamole and other products containing jalapeños that may be contaminated with salmonella. The company has posted an online list of the products, which are sold at grocery chains including Target, Walmart, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.
Taylor Farms’ announcement comes after Coast Citrus Distributors voluntarily recalled its jalapeños over potential salmonella contamination. The two distributors source their jalapeños from the same farm in Sinaloa, Mexico, where the contamination likely occurred.
“Taylor Fresh Foods is no longer sourcing products from this farmer and will be filling orders from alternative suppliers,” the distributor said in a press release about the recall.
Taylor Farms issued the new recall three weeks after recalling its shredded iceberg lettuce after investigations linked it to the outbreak of cyclosporiasis — an intestinal illness caused by a parasite.
Thousands of laboratory-confirmed cases were reported in the recent cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to the company, with more than 175 hospitalizations.
“To date, Taylor Fresh Foods is not aware of any reported illnesses linked to its products containing jalapeños,” the release about the new recall states.
Beyond Texas, the affected states include Georgia, Florida, New York, Illinois and Vermont. Recalled products have a “Best If Used By” date up to and including August 16, 2026.
Started in Salinas, California in 1995, Taylor Fresh Foods is the largest produce supplier in the U.S., providing salads, fruits and vegetables to major grocery chains, retail groups, and restaurant operations throughout North America.
Products affected in Texas include Kroger-brand spicy roast beef sandwiches and pimento cheese dip, Target-brand guacamole and taco dip, and pico de gallo carried by Whole Foods, Walmart and Target. Store-brand salsa roja and salsa verde carried at Whole Foods have also been recalled.
Following the cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to Taylor Farms, Bruce Taylor, the business’ founder and CEO, immediately dispatched a lobbyist to the White House for an emergency meeting and to express “frustration with being excluded from the outbreak investigation process,” Forbes reported.
Shortly thereafter, the FDA announced that its laboratory findings linking Taylor Farms to the outbreak were a “false positive.”
