Given the lackluster performance of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s U.S. Senate campaign, it scarcely seems like guy wants to spend energy repairing self-inflicted PR blunders.
Yet here we are.
Paxton got unwanted attention over the weekend when he fired off a tweet letting his followers know he’d be stumping Monday in suburban Houston with Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. Hey, at least he’s out there pressing the flesh, right?
Only here’s the problem: Paxton referred to the burb in which he was scheduled to appear as Cyprus rather than Cypress.
“Next stop: Cyprus with the great @TedCruz,” a screenshot of Paxton’s original post reads. “We will keep Texas, Texas.”
Cyprus, of course is an island country off the southern coast of Turkey, while Cypress, Texas, is named for Cypress Creek, along which the area’s early settlers established themselves.
But, hey, what are a few letters and 6,850 miles?
Naturally, Paxton’s rival, Democratic Texas Rep. James Talarico, wasted no time in tweaking him over the mistake.
“It’s Cypress, not ‘Cyprus,'” Talarico’s campaign fired back on X. “But for all the time you spend on luxury vacations in Europe, it’s no surprise you don’t know Texas.”
Paxton has since deleted his original tweet, but the Talarico campaign’s snarky response remains — and it’s racked up 2.5 million views as of press time.
Along with plenty of posts from others roasting Paxton for the gaffe.
“Paxton has got to be a test for republicans to see how shitty of a candidate they can get elected,” X user @adjustleft commented.
“But Cyprus is beautiful too, and who are you to stop them if Ken and Ted want to go there for their next fun adventure. Can’t always be Cancun,” @barbarikon chimed in.
