Head shop chain Planet K has canceled its annual Día de los Muertos celebration and fireworks display at Woodlawn Lake, citing concerns about what it calls “ICE terrorism.”
“It is with heavy hearts that Planet K announces the cancellation of our Día de los Muertos Festival,” stated the poster shared by Woodlawn Lake Park’s Instagram account.
The free festival, originally scheduled for Monday, Nov. 2, has been an annual tradition at the park for 20 years.
“Throughout those 20 years, we have only had to cancel this beloved tradition twice — once due to COVID-19 and now due to current political and economic challenges that immigration enforcement that caused [sic] ongoing conflict,” the poster said.
“The decision was not made lightly,” the announcement continued. “We refuse to bring people together under ICE TERRORISM & political war, and the immigration enforcement that caused ongoing conflict.”
Planet K’s founder and CEO, Austin libertarian Michael Kleinman, is known for his contrarian political views, some of which align with progressive causes.
“Although we have taken a pause this year, we have faith we can return in 2027,” the poster said before ending with the dates for early voting and Election Day and a message of unity:
“Viva la tradición! Viva nuestra comunidad!”
