San Antonio police arrested high-profile local attorney Martin Phipps over the weekend on accusations that he performed indecent acts with children at his home.
It’s the second time in as many months that Phipps, who gained attention for representing Bexar County in its lawsuit against opioid manufacturers, has faced criminal charges.
On Friday, police charged Phipps, 57, with indecency with a child by exposure and indecency with a child by sexual contact, both felonies, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by KSAT.
Phipps’ attorney, Nicholas “Nico” LaHood, told the Express-News that his client unequivocally denies the allegations, adding that the minors, ages 14 and 16, are his own children.
“He’s actually crushed that his children would make false claims like this,” LaHood said.
Phipps was nude around the two children in his home and make them sleep in his bed, according to the affidavit obtained by KSAT. The attorney also allegedly made inappropriate physical contact with the 14-year-old boy, the station reports, citing the document.
The dates of the alleged offenses are June 1, 2022, and Aug. 28, 2026, according to KSAT.
Phipps’ latest arrest comes after police took him into custody in August on charges that he made a terroristic threat against a 16-year-old family member inside his home, a misdemeanor.
The recent arrests are just the latest in a string of controversies surrounding Phipps, who helped Bexar County win its $14.5 million settlement against opioid manufacturers in 2021.
Phipps’ law firm and his rooftop cocktail bar Paramour last week agreed to vacate their spaces at a high-visibility River Walk building after a long-simmering dispute with landlord CDC Enterprises LP, the Express-News reports.
CDC reportedly made attempted to lock Phipps and his businesses out of the building prior to the settlement.
