President Donald Trump posted a list of endorsements Thursday morning that included nearly all Texas Republicans seeking statewide office — but with a couple of notable exceptions.
Despite their MAGA loyalty, Trump didn’t say he’s backing Bo French, a North Texas Republican running for Texas railroad commissioner who’s known for his frequent racist outbursts, and Nate Sheets, the GOP candidate for Texas agriculture commissioner.
French, a longtime Trump supporter, has come under fire — even from members of his own party — for his racist comments and extreme views.
French’s absence suggests that his racist and anti-immigrant rhetoric might be too extreme even for Trump. However, other controversial candidates, including Brandon Herrera — a Republican who’s referred to kids as “cum trophies” and is running to represent Texas’ 23rd district in Congress — made the list.
After years of French’s worshipful posts about Trump, that’s gotta sting.
The Railroad Commission hopeful’s opponent, Democratic state Rep. Jon Rosenthal of Houston, took a jab at French on Thursday morning over his absence from Trump’s list.
“Even @realDonaldTrump knows Bo is unfit to lead,” he said.
However, Trump gave no reason for his snub of French or Sheets, who faces Democrat and goat farmer Clayton Tucker in the race for Texas agriculture commissioner.
Sid Miller, the MAGA Republican currently serving as ag commissioner, said in an interview this week on MS Now that he didn’t vote for Sheets.
Though Miller has stopped short of endorsing Tucker outright, the pair are united in opposing data centers, making for one of the most unlikely political alignments this season. Sheets hasn’t expressed opposition to data centers in rural Texas.
Though Sheets was snubbed by the president, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has endorsed him in the race. Miller told MS Now he didn’t vote for Abbott either.
Texas politics is a mess. We make it a readable mess.
