Construction on San Antonio’s new $1.4 billion airport terminal will get underway this Tuesday, according to media reports.
The new addition, Terminal C, will add 832,000 square feet of space to San Antonio International, doubling the airport’s size, KENS5 reports. The project, set to wrap up sometime in 2028, is also expected to create about 6,000 jobs, according to the TV station.
Terminal C is part of a 20-year, $2.5 billion strategic development program to bolster the airport and help with record passenger demand. Indeed, SAT broke passenger volume records during the first 10 months of 2024 with 1,032,610 passengers traveling through the city in July, according to Simple Flying.
Even so, the new terminal hasn’t been without controversy. San Antonio’s largest air carrier, Southwest Airlines, sued the city in September over the expansion.
Southwest’s suit argues that Airport Director Jesus Saenz gave the Texas-based carrier a verbal commitment that it would have space inside the new terminal. However, the ultimately offered Southwest the option to renew its lease at the aging Terminal A.
A hearing on the matter was set for December but has since been postponed.
San Antonio’s multi-billion dollar airport revamp also comes as Austin International Airport prepares to undergo a billion airport expansion, which will be complete in 2029, according to the Austin Monitor.
