Two San Antonio toddlers were rushed to the hospital over the weekend after sustaining injuries from an attack by a pit bull, according to KSAT.
Police were dispatched to an apartment in the 4200 block of West Commerce Street after receiving a call about a dog bite. Upon arrival at the West Side complex, officers found a 1-year-old with a bite to their face and a 3-year-old who’d been bitten on their lip and upper arm, KSAT reports.
A babysitter watching the children was giving the pit bull a bath when the canine escaped from the bathroom and entered the bedroom where the children were, according to the TV station. The report didn’t specify what prompted the attack.
Both the children’s adult caretaker and the dog’s owner face multiple citations for the attack and for the animal lacking a rabies vaccination and microchip, San Antonio Animal Care Services said in a statement.
“The investigation has begun in earnest, and the dog is in ACS custody,” ACS officials said. “But it is already very clear: irresponsible pet care and guardianship are the root cause of tragedies like this, and this attack was 100% preventable.”
The attack comes two months after a pit bull mauled a 1-year-old being watched by a babysitter. That toddler later died from his injuries.
