San Antonio ranks as the third-deadliest city for Texas drivers, having racked up 860 traffic fatalities between 2018 and 2022, according to a recent study.
The report, released by Miami-based Amanda Demanda Injury Lawyers, compiled crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the five most recent years that it’s available.
Houston took the top spot in Texas with 1393 traffic fatalities, while Dallas followed with 1059. San Antonio, Fort Worth and Austin rounded out the top five with 860, 560 and 494 deaths, respectively.
The study attributes the high number of San Antonio and Houston fatalities to busy Interstate 10, which accounted for 667 fatalities over the study period.
The longest highway in Texas passes through both San Antonio and Houston and features an 80 mph speed limit in some spots. The high speed limit likely makes I-10 accidents more fatal, according to the study.
Austin, the fifth-deadliest city for drivers, is home to the country’s highest speed limit of 85 mph on State Highway 130, according to KXAN.
The number of registered vehicles in Texas has also gone up by about one million over the study period, rising from 22 million to more than 23 million, according to the Federal Highway Administration. That jump in vehicles on the road also could add to the death count.
“With a combination of densely populated urban areas, high-speed roadways and ever-increasing numbers of vehicles, cities like Houston, Dallas and San Antonio consistently rank among the deadliest for drivers,” the study stated.
