The 13-year-old boy who allegedly planned to carry out a mass shooting at San Antonio’s Rhodes Middle School earlier this year was sentenced to two years’ probation after entering a guilty plea on Friday, the Express-News reports.
The boy, who appeared before the 436th Juvenile District Court, entered a plea of “true” on a second-degree felony arson charge — the equivalent of “guilty” in juvenile court, the daily reports.
In exchange for the plea, prosecutors waived a possession of a prohibited weapon charge.
Judge William “Cruz” Shaw sentenced the youth to two years’ probation in a residential facility. During that time, the teen will be in the custody of a probation officer and will be released into the care of his grandmother upon the completion of his sentence.
The youth’s mother, Ashley Pardo, 33, is charged with aiding in the mass shooting plans by buying him tactical gear, firearm magazines and ammunition. She was arrested last month on a separate charge after authorities said she pointed a shotgun at an infant in 2023.
The boy was arrested on May 12 after his grandmother called the police and said she found found loaded ammunition magazines and explosives in his bedroom. He had also previously expressed interest in mass shootings, including the 2019 Christchurch Mosque massacre, according to authorities.
