Dry weather and steady winds caused a surge in fireworks emergencies over the New Year’s holiday, Bexar County officials said Friday.

Indeed, the county recorded a 31% increase in fireworks-related incidents compared to last year’s holiday.

Between Dec. 28 and New Year’s Day, emergency crews responded to 113 triggered by fireworks, according to the county. Of those, 42 stemmed from firework-related blazes, including 13 grass fires, nine trash-bin fires, eight structure fires and three vehicle fires.

Officials estimate fireworks caused $475,000 in property damage and loss over the New Year’s holiday in Bexar County.
