Clowning around is another way to say “goofing off,” but actual clowning is serious business.
How often do you get to increase your understanding of character-based movements that prioritize physical spontaneity and spatial awareness? What kind of performer are you? Traditional? Slap happy? Morose verging on (gasp) mime-adjacent territory a la Shakes the Clown?
If you’re interested in the clowning art form, Turnip Theater’s workshops Viewpoints and Clowning — scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday at San Antonio arts space Urban-15 — can help set you on your path, whatever that may be.
The Viewpoints workshop is based on a clowning approach often compared to the Strasberg Method and is taught by NYU-trained Ruthie Buescher, an expert in physical theater and artistic director of the Turnip ensemble.
Meanwhile, Clowning will be led by Julia Fae, a working clown and physical theater artist.
$90 for one day or $180 for both days (full and partial scholarships available), 9:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. both days, Urban-15, 2500 S. Presa St., (210) 538-4936, turniptheater.com.
