San Antonio chef Johnny Hernandez will expand the menu at his Southtown eatery Burgerteca by partnering with the owners of family-owned Blue Moon Mexican Restaurant in nearby Palm Heights.
Starting in mid-May, Burgerteca — which puts an interior-Mexican twist on American burgers — will begin serving breakfast, lunch and dinner items from Blue Moon, a 15-year-old eatery operated by Alejandra and Silvano Garcia, Hernandez said Wednesday. The South Side favorite is known for hearty Mexican fare such as carne guisada, cheese enchiladas and breakfast plates.
“The Garcias are my dear neighbors, and Blue Moon — just two blocks from my house — has long been my go-to spot for great food,” Hernandez said in an emailed statement. “Our collaboration is a celebration of community, flavor and the friendly spirit of San Antonio. We’re bringing together two local favorites to create something truly special.”
Blue Moon will continue to operate its original location at 3228 S. Flores St.
Meanwhile, the arrangement will expand the culinary offerings at Burgerteca, 403 Blue Star St., while allowing it to continue serving favorites such as its specialty burgers, bacon-wrapped hot dogs, menudo and Caldo Xochitl.
The partnership is the second major tweak Hernandez has given Burgerteca in as many years. In early, 2024, the restaurateur added a margarita garden and coffee bar to the site.
In addition to unveiling the Blue Moon partnership, Hernandez said Wednesday that his Burgerteca, Southtown Coffee and Fruteria concepts will become part of Southtown Food Hall, a new multi-restaurant concept he’s developing and will open early next year.
Southtown Food Hall, located at 1725 S. Alamo St., will be developed in a building Hernandez currently uses as warehouse space for his restaurants. The dining spot will include a full bar in addition to other food concepts.
“The Southtown Food Hall will be a true reflection of our community’s spirit,” Hernandez said via email. “We’re creating a space where everyone can come together to enjoy great food, drinks, and the laid-back yet artistic atmosphere that makes Southtown so special. I’m excited to explore and expand some of my original restaurant concepts to create something authentic and exciting for the neighborhood.”
