With the impending closure of Southtown bar Lowcountry, San Antonio is set to lose one of its hippest watering holes.

The business is scheduled to shut down at the end of May, according to a Wednesday afternoon Instagram post.

“Big news, y’all. Lowcountry, my very favorite bar in the whole wide world, is closing down at the end of May,” co-owner Drew Morros wrote in the post’s caption. “It’s been a great run and I have been so lucky to have had great folks on both sides of the bar for the past 9 years.”

Though Morros didn’t explicitly spell out a reason for the closure, he did offer a hint: “Landlords gonna landlord.”

Separately, Morros told online news outlet MySA that the landlord is selling the building, adding that she’s trying not to take it “too personally.”

Lowcountry is just one of several Southtown businesses that have closed either temporarily or permanently in recent months, including Filling Station Tap Room, The Station Cafe, Near Dark, The Good Kind and Brick at Blue Star.

Morros and co-founder Roberta Marques opened Lowcountry in late 2016 in partnership with bar developer Danny Delgado. It operates from a converted two-story house at 318 Martinez St.

The former residence’s front porch has become another kind of home, of sorts, for bar regulars, offering an almost European cafe experience and affording the opportunity to both socialize and people watch. The backyard offered even more of a draw, often hosting live music performances by local bands.

Lowcountry was classy enough to serve up artisanal cocktails but down home enough to offer something called a “shot and a wash” — a shot of bourbon and a Miller High Life pony for $6.

But perhaps the spot will be best remembered for its sense of community, something demonstrated in its farewell post, where smiling patrons are the main subject.

Lowcountry is open 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday through the end of May. Which means it’s not too late to get in a few more porch hangs.
