Garcia Barbecue, which launched as a pop-up in 2019 before expanding to a brick-and-mortar space last year, has permanently shut down.
“We here at Garcia Barbecue want to reach out and let everyone know we have closed up shop in the Medical Center at 9390 Huebner Road,” the San Antonio business announced via its social media channels. “We want to thank each and every one of you for supporting us throughout the years on our journey.”
Friends Alex Garcia and Jonathan Garcia — no relation — co-founded the concept in 2019 after tinkering with their own spice rubs at backyard cookouts for friends and family.
Sensing they were onto something, the self-dubbed “brothers in brisket” built their own smoker and hit the road in a food truck — the beginning of what became Garcia Barbecue. They made it through the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually adding a second food truck to meet customer demand.
The team at Garcia Barbecue eventually made the transition to a full-fledged storefront in 2024. Their Medical Center restaurant adopted a no-tip policy for customers while offering up the signature brisket, pulled pork, loaded nachos, brisket tacos and other items that found a following at the food trucks.
SA foodies mourned news of the closure on social media, asking if Garcia Barbecue would at least return as a mobile kitchen.
Alex Garcia told the Current he plans to continue work at the Dinorito food truck, which operates from near-downtown food-truck park El Camino. The Garcia Barbecue offshoot offers similar menu items .
While the Medical Center storefront is closed for good, “most of the food will stay the same — but at that food truck,” he added.
