Muelle 37, a Rio Grande Valley-based chain of Mexican seafood restaurants, is angling to open its first San Antonio location early next year.

The company will begin construction of a 6,000-square-foot eatery at 4729 W. Commerce St. in the West Side’s Crosstowne Mercado, a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation shows. Work is expected to start in late September and wrap up in January, according to the document.

Officials with Muelle 37 — its name is Spanish for “Dock 37” — were unavailable for immediate comment on the business’ northward expansion.

Muelle 37 operates a dozen restaurants, including locations in McAllen, Brownsville and Corpus Christi, according to its website.

The restaurants’ menus feature a variety of Mexican-style seafood platters along with seafood soups and cocktails. They also serve up items including fajitas, hamburgers and tacos along with margaritas and a variety of signature and classic cocktails.

The chain’s arrival follows news that McAllen-based Mexican seafood staple La Costa Grill is beginning work on its first San Antonio restaurant and that El Paso chef Enrique Lozano has opened Aguazul Seafood, an eatery focused on coastal Mexican flavors, in Balcones Heights.
