Shortly after unveiling a new lineup of Black Flag in which founding Greg Ginn is joined by musicians who appear to be a fraction of his age, the pioneering LA punk band has released dates for a 2025 tour.
Those include a Friday, Aug. 29, stop at San Antonio’s Paper Tiger. Tickets aren’t yet available online, nor has the venue announced a price.
Black Flag, now Texas-based and revolving around sole founding member Ginn, just played the Paper Tiger in early December — although with a totally different lineup.
That incarnation included lead vocalist Mike Vallely, a professional skateboarder, who’d been with the group since 2013. The others members were even newer — drummer Charles Wiley joined in 2022 and bassist Austin Sears came onboard in 2023.
Despite the relatively recent vintage of the December touring lineup, Ginn has replaced all of its members with an even fresher-faced crew: vocalist Max Zanelly, bassist David Rodriguez and drummer Bryce Weston.
Although punk icons Keith Morris and Henry Rollins once fronted Black Flag, little is known about Zanelly — or the rest of the band, for that matter.
Indeed, the latest lineup, who look like they could be Ginn’s grandkids, has met with mixed reactions online, ranging from ridicule to excitement about the new era. While Black Flag released a promo photo of its latest incarnation to the press, the shot doesn’t appear anywhere on the band’s website or social media.
“With a fresh lineup and renewed creative energy, Black Flag is gearing up for an exciting season of live shows and new music production,” the band said in a statement. “The group has already begun writing and rehearsing together, building on their signature sound while embracing new influences brought in by the latest members.”
It continued: “Black Flag’s upcoming performances will showcase the chemistry and talent of the revitalized lineup, giving fans a first taste of the new era.”
Based on how quickly the band’s cycled through members, we’ll see how long this new era lasts.
