This week, Alamo City residents will get to hear music from both a Spurs play-by-play announcer and a San Antonio-raised filmmaker. Music may not be the thing either is best known for, but both take the art form seriously and are well worth checking out.
Thursday, June 11
Bill Schoening & Friends, Jeph Duarte Band, Jacob Tobey
The radio voice of the Spurs for more than two decades, Bill Schoening spent his nights painting images in the minds of Spurs fans throughout south Texas. Since retiring, Schoening has more time for his own storytelling as a blue-eyed soul singer fronting a great Austin-based band. He’s celebrating the release of his Collaborations EP, which includes work with other artists, including Spurs television play-by-play announcer and singer Jacob Tobey. Tobey will open the show with an acoustic set of his own. Bonus: expect door prizes and Spurs swag giveaways. $16.56-$41.03. 6:30 p.m., Sam’s Burger Joint, 330 E. Grayson St., (210) 223-2830, samsburgerjoint.com. — Danny Cervantes

Robert Rodriguez’s Chingon Band
Before you let out a groan about another Hollywood guy dabbling in music, realize San Antonio-raised filmmaker Robert Rodriguez isn’t engaging in bland white-guy blues. His band’s moody and attitude-filled Latin rock comes across as something more vital than another celebrity ego trip. Originally formed to perform on the soundtrack to Rodriguez’s Once Upon a Time in Mexico, the group since provided music for other independent films. $35-$140, 7 p.m., Aztec Theatre, 104 N. St. Mary’s St., (210) 812-4355, theaztectheatre.com. — BB
Saturday, June 13
Dru Hill
Urban R&B outfit Dru Hill will bring 30 years of slow jams to town for a “Black Tie Concert” with formal attire strongly recommended. Expect founding members Sisqó and Nokio to set the mood with hits including “Never Make a Promise” and “How Deep Is Your Love.” $39-$224, 8 p.m., Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, 100 Auditorium Circle, (210) 223-8624, tobincenter.org. — DC
Saturday, June 13
Nekromantix
Started in Denmark in 1989, horror-themed psychobilly act Nekromantix is led by vocalist-bassist and sole original member Kim Nekroman, who’s known for thumping along on his coffin-shaped instrument. The band’s fast-paced backbeat, slew of oh-woah vocals and warbling guitar melodies may give you the urge to slap on an extra handful of pomade to scoop your pompadour to new heights. $33.34-$232.45, 8 p.m., Sam’s Burger Joint, 330 E. Grayson St., (210) 223-2830, samsburgerjoint.com. — Brianna Espinoza
Monday, June 15
Kittie, Kingdom of Giants, Gore
After a roughly 10-year hiatus, Canada’s hard-riffing Kittie is back on tour. Although once considered part of the nu-metal explosion, the all-woman band has its own distinctive claws-out style. Sisters Morgan and Mercedes Lander remain from the band’s iconic lineup. $59-$63.70, 7:30 p.m., Aztec Theatre, 104 N. St. Mary’s St., (210) 812-4355, theaztectheatre.com. — BE
