Beloved San Antonio-based grocer H-E-B sells the nation’s lowest-priced eggs, according new data from personal finance site FinanceBuzz.

To compile the rankings, FinanceBuzz researchers analyzed the average price of a dozen large Grade A white eggs at each the nation’s eight biggest grocery chains, including H-E-B, Kroger, Giant Eagle, Meijer, Target, Walmart and more.

The average price of those same eggs climbed more than 42% since Jan. 6, hitting $5.60 a carton on March 17.

However, H-E-B appears to have bucked the trend. The average price for large Grade A white eggs at H-E-B landed at $4.49 a dozen on March 17 — about 20% lower than the national average.

FinanceBuzz attributed the rapid rise in egg prices to the ongoing bird flu outbreak, which has affected some 56 million chickens since December,
according to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. And it doesn’t look like shoppers will see a reprieve anytime soon. The Food and Drug Administration projects that egg prices will continue to rise by more than 40% by year’s end.

Here’s a rundown of the cost of a dozen large Grade A white eggs at each the nation’s eight biggest grocery chains:

  1. H-E-B: $4.49
  2. Kroger: $5.31
  3. Giant Eagle: $5.49
  4. Meijer: $5.79
  5. Target: $5.79
  6. Walmart: $5.80
  7. Aldi: $5.97
  8. Publix: $6.16
