Things get wild down in the South Texas town of Elmendorf.

First, Elmendorf Police reported a runaway kangaroo on the loose in the area on Wednesday. But the crazy times weren’t over. Within 24 hours, police in the town just 20 minutes southeast of the Alamo City said a llama was running amok and had shut down traffic in both directions on a local roadway.

Local authorities posted an announcement on Facebook Wednesday, notifying the public of the Australian marsupial and stating “We officially have ‘kangaroo on the loose’ checked off the city bingo card.”

The post included advice for locals on what to do should they encounter the renegade ‘roo. In addition to insisting that folks avoid approaching the animal or trying to capture it, the post also urged: “DO NOT attempt to box the kangaroo.”

Noted.

Funny, sure, but a bunch of Texans were probably thinking about it.

Commenters had a field day with the post, even outfitting the animal in his own Spurs jersey.

Do you think Little Rex is a Spurs fan?

For those wondering if it’s legal to keep a kangaroo as a pet in Texas, it is — in certain areas. Because Elmendorf is outside San Antonio city limits, it’s legal with the proper permit.

Elmendorf police later updated their post to say they had located and captured the kangaroo — whom we now know is named Little Rex — and that “no further hopping through city limits is expected at this time.”

But the very next day, Elmendorf’s finest had another update. This time, a llama was loose — and appeared to be … hitchhiking?

An Elmendorf police officer happened to be patrolling on FM 327 when he encountered the llama, possibly thumbing his way to his ancestral homeland of Peru. The officer shut down traffic on the busy two-lane roadway to bring the camelid mammal to safety.

Local authorities located the owner of the llama on the lamb and returned the animal, named Captain, to his rightful home.

Despite the appearance of some sort of coordinated plot, Captain and Little Rex do not seem to be working together to sow chaos in this Texas town. However, we’re waiting eagerly for the feature-length film.

Police also assured the public this wasn’t some sort of publicity stunt by the department.

“And yes, we know this comes right after yesterday’s kangaroo capture,” Elmendorf Police stated in the post about the llama. “We promise we are not begging for attention — apparently the animals just saw the post and wanted their turn.”

We’re just relieved it’s not a sign that Jumanji is real.
