The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed a tornado touched down at around 8 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of I-10 and Loop 1604, damaging shops at The Rim shopping center, including the Santikos Palladium cinema.

In a statement, the City of San Antonio said the fire department is also on the scene at an apartment complex at 6023 UTSA Boulevard “assessing multiple properties for damage.” The statement asked residents to avoid the affected areas to let first responders go about their duties and ensure they’re safe.

In images obtained by the Current, the wind from the tornado appears to have ripped material from the awning of the Greek Revival-styled Santikos Palladium.

Footage obtained by the Current also shows workers cleaning up the damage.

Meanwhile, a video clip shared on X by user @WeatherMonitors shows the twister moving across the interchange of I-10 and Loop 1604. Flashes of light suggest the tornado also may have struck electrical infrastructure.

As of press time, CPS Energy reports it’s dealing with 40 active power outages affecting more than 1,100 customers, mostly on the North Side near where the tornado touched down.

No fatalities or injuries have been reported to authorities as of press time. The NWS will conduct a survey to determine the path and strength of the tornado.

A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for far north Bexar County, as well as a large swath of the county east of Hollywood Park. That warning is set to expire at 3 p.m.

The San Antonio Current is on the ground at The Rim and North of Downtown, where eyewitnesses have reported of additional damage and street closures. This story will be updated as more information comes in.
