As the Spurs and the Knicks face off on basketball’s biggest stage, the San Antonio Food Bank and the Food Bank for New York are engaging in friendly competition to rally both fan bases for a shared win of feeding neighbors in need.
The two hunger-fighting organizations launched a joint fundraiser this week called Slam Dunk on Hunger. The challenge is simple: between now and the end of the Finals, both food banks are tracking the number of individual donations and total dollars raised to see which can generate the biggest impact.
As of Wednesday afternoon, San Antonio had already raised more than $25,000 toward its $100,000 goal.
San Antonio Food Bank CEO Eric Cooper told the Current that while Slam Dunk on Hunger’s tone is competitive, the stakes are shared. Every dollar supports food assistance programs in each city, and both organizations understand the real victory is the collective work to end hunger.
“It is crazy to think about the pressure and the intensity that will be on the court, but, at the end of the series, both communities will win through the Slam Dunk on Hunger campaign,” Cooper said. “The real victory will be for the families that will be nourished from the funds raised in both communities.”
The San Antonio Food Bank is encouraging residents to channel their Spurs pride into community support, whether that looks like a small individual donation, a workplace challenge or even just sharing the campaign link on social media.
Spurs fans can make online donations at the contest’s webpage, where a real-time tally shows how San Antonio stacks up against New York. For now, the scoreboard is wide open, but Cooper and his staff are betting Spurs fans know how to close out a series.
