Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is continuing to rail against NBA commentator and 11-time NBA All-Star Charles Barkley over his jokes about the waistlines of San Antonio women.
During Jones’ appearance Monday on Texas Public Radio’s The Source, host David Martin Davies asked her about her verbal scuffle with Barkley prior to Game 1 of the NBA Finals, a national TV appearance in which the mayor accused Barkley of lacking class and courage.
Jones was pushing back at Barkley’s long-running schtick of insulting the women of San Antonio, including frequent claims the city’s “big ol’ women” indulge in too many churros.
“It’s disrespectful,” Jones told Davies. “You’re not going to come here, make these ridiculous comments about San Antonio women, when you yourself are not in that great a shape.”
Indeed, Barkley’s own bulk has been a talking point in the past, earning him the nickname “The Round Mound of Rebound.”
During the radio show, Jones blasted the commentator as “Chuky Chucky Churros” and called him out for never winning an NBA championship during his 16 seasons in the NBA.
“You’re just not going to come to San Antonio and talk to the third female mayor and think you’re gonna let that stuff fly,” Jones said of Barkley’s past comments. “Come on, brother.”
Barkley will be back in San Antonio for Game 5 of the Finals thanks to the Spurs securing their first win of the series Monday at Madison Square Garden. Alamo City residents will have to wait and see whether Barkley dares to make another jab at San Antonio women when he returns.
In the meantime, Game 4 will tip off in New York on Wednesday. The game gets underway at 7:30 p.m. local time and will air on ABC and ESPN.
