More than 42,000 students began returning to the University of Texas at San Antonio on Monday for the start of the fall semester — a multi-day delay brought on by a recent cyber attack.
Classes were scheduled to start last Wednesday, but the university pushed back the date, citing a breach of its computer network. Officials said personnel detected the break-in before it reached core systems.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we proactively took systems and services offline to evaluate our technology environment and reinforce safeguards before bringing services back online,” UTSA President Taylor Eighmy said in an online statement.
UTSA is asking any student, faculty member or staffer who hasn’t yet reset their school pass phrase to do so. UTSA is offering online assistance for those who need help resetting their information.
Despite the delayed start, UTSA officials said significant calendar dates such as the fall break, census day and the end of the semester won’t change.
