After initiating a gun buyback last year that removed hundreds of weapons from circulation, San Antonio Councilman and mayoral candidate John Courage is hosting yet another such exchange later this month.

The second annual weapons exchange organized by the District 9 councilman will take place Sunday, Nov. 24, in the parking lot of the Alamodome, 100 Montana St., according to new details unveiled by his office. It will run noon to 5 p.m.

Those who hand over shotguns and hunting rifles will receive a $100 H-E-B gift card, while supplies last. Meanwhile, the city will provide $150 gift cards to those who turn in pistols or handguns and $200 gift cards to those who relinquish assault rifles such as AR-15s.

During last year’s event, San Antonio residents turned over more than 900 guns. Indeed, the event was so successful that organizers ran out of H-E-B gift cards.

Courage told TV station KENS5 that his goal this year is to collect more than 1,000 firearms.

“That gun that is turned in to us will never hurt a human being, will never commit a crime, will never be used to threaten anybody because it’ll be destroyed,” the councilman told the station.
