Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa is in a virtual tie with Gov. Greg Abbott, the Republican incumbent, according to a new poll released Tuesday by nonpartisan Texas Public Opinion Research.
Of the 1,048 likely Texas voters surveyed between July 15 and July 17, 45% said they plan to vote for Abbott, while 42% said they prefer Hinojosa, putting the Austin state representative within the 3.4% margin of error.
Boosting Hinojosa is her popularity with Black voters, with whom she leads by 49%, according to the survey. Meanwhile, her Rio Grande Valley roots helped push Hinojosa to lead with Latino voters by 38%.
“Texans are ready for change, and my plan is simple: save public schools, put money in your pocket, and end the Greg Abbott Corruption Tax,” Hinojosa said in a statement. “While Abbott still focuses on lining the pockets of his billionaire buddies and data center donations, I’m traveling the state hearing from Republicans, Independents, and Democrats that are ready to rebuild the American Dream in Texas with an economy that works for the people, strong neighborhood schools, and safe communities.
Hinojosa’s camp also noted in a press release that the polling shows that Abbott, who’s seeking a historic fourth term in office, is the “least popular he’s been in his political career.”
If Hinojosa is successful in November, she would be Texas’ first Democratic governor since Ann Richards led the state from 1991 to 1995.
