The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office on Friday officially ruled the death of 19-year-old Texas A&M student Brianna Aguilera a suicide, KSAT reports.
The findings of the medical examiner are the same as those of the Austin Police Department, which last month said their investigation also indicated Aguilera took her own life. APD ruled that she jumped off the balcony of a friend’s apartment in the city’s West Campus neighborhood.
Police also found a suicide note on Aguilera’s phone that she deleted days before her death.
Even so, Houston-based personal injury attorney Tony Buzbee and San Antonio-based Gamez Law Firm filed a wrongful death suit on the family’s behalf, arguing the student wasn’t suicidal.
“The Austin Police Department’s ‘investigation’ fell woefully short,” Buzbee said in a statement to KSAT. “Brianna deserved better. Her family deserves better.”
Buzbee has accused APD of conducting a shoddy investigation and failing to interview key witnesses inside the apartment at the time of Aguilera’s fall.
“[APD] failed to interview all witnesses, failed to take statements under oath, failed to put together an accurate timeline, failed to secure video footage, and most importantly, failed to follow through and interview witnesses, even the ones that we identified for them,” he said in a statement to TMZ.
