Former North Texas Congressman Colin Allred has ended his Senate campaign and will instead run for Congress in the Dallas area’s redrawn District 33.

The decision, revealed Monday morning, comes as the likelihood builds that U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett of will join the Senate race, which also includes Texas Rep. James Talarico of Austin. Both Crockett and Talarico are considered Democratic rising stars. However, this had been the second Senate campaign for Allred, who was trounced by U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz two years ago.

“I am deeply moved by the personal stories and trust that so many Texans have placed in me,” Allred said in an online statement. “I’m forever grateful and believe it comes with heavy responsibility. That’s why I’ve made the difficult decision to end my campaign for Senate and run to represent the newly drawn CD-33.”

In an exclusive Dallas Morning News interview, the former U.S. Rep said the race to replace incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican, lost its appeal after it appeared to be headed for “long, drawn out, brutal primary and runoff.”

Allred was first elected to Congress in 2018, flipping Texas’ 32nd Congressional District from red to blue. He gave up the seat to run against Cruz in 2024.

The attorney and former NFL player is now running in the 33rd District, created when the Republican-controlled Texas legislature redrew the state’s maps this summer to favor the GOP. The race will pit Allred against U.S. Rep. Julie Johnson, the Democrat who replaced him in District 32.
