Texans receive the nation’s second-highest number of parking tickets, according to a new study based on nationwide parking violation data.
It’s anyone’s guess whether that means Texans are especially bad at parking or that our authorities here are especially happy to slap tickets on a windshields, though.
Texans receive an estimated 17 million parking tickets annually, totaling $946 million in fines, according to the study, released by attorney-matching platform LawBear. Ouch.
However, that’s nothing compared to California. Golden State drivers receive nearly 22 million parking tickets annually, racking up some $1.4 billion in fines.
But since California has more drivers, Texas actually has a higher per-capita traffic ticket rate than California, the study notes.
To get their study results, LawBear researchers analyzed parking violations using data from the U.S. Department of Transportation. States were ranked by their estimated annual parking tickets, a figure that shows the overall volume of violations.
Texas is followed on the list by Florida, New York, Pennsylvania and Illinois, respectively.
New Yorkers pay the highest parking fines at $70 per ticket. However, California’s are just a bit lower at $65, while Texas comes in at $55.
