Texas State Sen. Carol Alvarado, D-Houston, plans to delay final passage of the Republican-backed redistricting map in the Texas Senate with an overnight filibuster.
Alvarado announced her plans on social media Friday afternoon.
“Republicans think they can walk all over us. Today I’m going to kick back,” Alvarado said in the caption of a photo depicting sneakers on the Texas congressional districts map. “I’ve submitted my intention to filibuster the new congressional maps. Going to be a long night.”
Given that the redistricting map has already passed the Texas House and a prior map substantively similar to the one presented Monday already cleared the Texas Senate, Alvarado’s action is merely delaying the inevitable.
The Senate is expected to pass the redistricting map and send it to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk to be signed into law over the weekend. The redrawn maps will give Republicans even more of a stronghold in Texas as the 2026 midterms approach.
