University of Texas football fans have launched an online petition to ban U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz from the school’s sporting events on the basis of the so-called “Cruz Curse.”
Launched ahead of the Longhorns’ much-anticipated matchup this Saturday against the University of Georgia Bulldogs, the petition is based on lore that Lone Star State teams lose games the Republican senator attends. The petition, launched Sept. 29, has amassed more than 1,500 signatures as of press time.
“The Longhorns deserve a season of Greatness,” the petition states. “We are the best, most passionate fans here in the heart of Texas. We can’t let an outsider like Cr*z, someone who didn’t even go to UT, who roots for whatever team he thinks will get Texans to like him, ruin Texas Longhorns sports.”
The petition also says Cruz should “stick to the Aggie sidelines.”
Longhorn backers aren’t the only Texas sports enthusiasts who have accused Cruz of being a bad omen. Cruz’s Democratic challenger, U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, even launched a humorous social media ad in August encouraging voters to unseat the senator to end the curse.
“Without Ted, the Sugar Bowl would’ve been sweeter, the Astros would have won the pennant, Texas Tech would’ve gone all the way, and the Rockets would’ve soared into the finals,” Allred’s ad said. “Instead, Ted’s curse shattered the dreams of Texas teams.”
Most recently, the purported Cruz curse struck when the Houston Astros lost both National League Wildcard games earlier this month. The senator, who resides in Houston, attended both games.
In August, Cruz attended Texas A&M’s game against Notre Dame. The Aggies lost that one 23-13.
