Editor’s note: The headline of this story was changed to reflect that The Hayden’s Alan Market store isn’t in immediate danger of closure.
Homegrown diner chain The Hayden sent out a newsletter to customers warning that a months-long business slump may force it to shutter its location in North Central San Antonio’s Alon Market.
“The past 8+ months have been a tough stretch, and I need to be honest: we’re at a turning point,” owner Adam Hayden Lampinstein said in the message. “Like many small businesses, we’ve felt the slowdown, and while Broadway is holding on, the Alon location is struggling.”
The Hayden — a self-proclaimed “South Texas diner with an old-school Jewish delicatessen soul” — opened its Alon store, 10003 N.W. Military Highway, Suite #2115, in early 2023.
The original location, 4025 Broadway, opened three years prior, building a dedicated following thanks to funky mashups of Jewish favorites such as chicken and potato latke waffles.
In the newsletter, Lampinstein urged diners to visit either location, noting that the chain had revamped its menu to offer more value and make the dining experience “exactly what you want it to be in the moment.” He also reminded patrons that while the restaurants are known for brunch and lunch, they also serve dinner.
“If you’ve ever enjoyed a meal, shared a laugh, or felt like family at The Hayden, now is the time we need you most,” he added. “Whether you stop by for brunch, grab dinner and drinks, or order takeout, every visit helps keep our doors open. And if you haven’t been to Alon, please give us a shot — we want to make it your go-to neighborhood spot.”
The one-two punch of rising prices and dwindling diners has forced a wave of San Antonio restaurant closures, from casual favorites such as Dignowity Meats and Lala’s Gorditas to higher-end spots including Europa Restaurant & Bar and Botika.
