San Taco, a two-year-old restaurant that’s earned rave reviews for its flavorful Mexican guisados, will close its doors Dec. 31, the Express-News reports.

Married chef-owners Charlie Gonzalez and Gaby Hinojosa are shuttering the spot to focus on their other Mexican restaurant, Panfila Cantina, along with Italian eatery Tutto Pepe, according to the daily. They’re also expecting their first child.

San Taco is known for dishing up Mexican-style street food including rajas con queso, chicharrón prensado and pork in salsa verde from imported Mexican earthenware pots. The restaurant also grabbed attention with giant menu items such as its two-foot-long torta and the giant croncha, a supersized combination of the Mexican concha and French croissant.

Current food critic Ron Bechol recently named San Taco one of his dozen “can’t miss” San Antonio dining spots, and the Express-News has ranked it as one of the city’s 10 best places for tacos.

The restaurant, located at 114 Fredericksburg Road, is one of several beloved Mexican food spots to close this year. The losses also include south-of-downtown favorite Lala’s Gorditas, West Side institution Rosa’s Tacos to Go and longtime UTSA-area food truck Ricky’s Tacos.
