It took just a matter of minutes Tuesday for the surprise Jack White show announced the day before for San Antonio’s Paper Tiger to completely sell out.
Perhaps that should be little surprise given that White — a key part of The White Stripes, Raconteurs and Dead Weather — is arena- or at least large theater-level famous and the Paper Tiger’s main room has a capacity of 1,000.
Fans joined the Paper Tiger’s ticket queue when it opened at 1 p.m., and the site frequently crashed, experienced long load times and needed to be refreshed. Even those who got in before the sale’s announced start time reported having hundreds of people ahead of them long after tickets had sold out.
Some seeking tickets registered in advance of the sale’s go-live time, which presumably gave them an advantage.
Tickets ran $101.90, with additional service fees. That represents a far more expensive show than usual for venue. But that didn’t stop San Antonio fans from pouncing on the rare opportunity to see White in an intimate setting.
After all, there’s a price to pay for rarity, scarcity and desirability.
Students still have a chance to see the rock ‘n’ roll revivalist, though. According to Paper Tiger’s management, $25 student tickets still available at the door with a valid school ID.
White’s appearance at Paper Tiger is one of a string of last-minute club shows and backyard fetes on his No Name tour, a surreptitious saunter across the U.S.A. promote his equally surreptitious album No Name. The LP, which first appeared on shelves with an unmarked cover, is now nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Album.
Say what you will about White, the dude loves his gimmicks.
$101.90 (sold out except for student tickets), 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, Paper Tiger, 2410 N. St. Mary’s St., papertigersatx.com.
