The Willy Wonka of rock ‘n’ roll is playing a surprise San Antonio date this week.

Former White Stripes member Jack White will perform this Friday at the Paper Tiger, the St. Mary’s Strip venue announced in a surprise Monday-morning social media post, to the shock and delight of fans and followers.

Tickets go on sale for $101 Tuesday at 1 p.m., according to Paper Tiger’s Facebook announcement.

Would-be attendees are encouraged to register for the chance to attend, according to Paper Tiger. The club also said a limited number of student tickets will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis at $25. The Paper Tiger is yet another intimate venue announced last-minute on Jack White’s current No Name tour, which is all about small clubs and backyard fetes.

White and his band are scheduled to play Austin’s Mohawk the day before the San Antonio show. Tulsa, Oklahoma, will follow the Alamo City.

The No Name tour is in support of White’s latest solo album of the same name, which dropped in July in a similarly sneaky fashion. Initially released as unlabeled vinyl in his Detroit wax emporium, Third Man Records, the album’s surreptitious debut required an equally stealthy tour, during which White and his band descend on cities like a rock ‘n’ roll flash mob.

White could easily fill much larger venues. However, it seems likely the Raconteurs and Dead Weather alum misses the intimacy of club shows, and this is probably the only way he can still do them.

$101.90 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, Paper Tiger, 2410 N. St. Mary’s St., papertigersatx.com.
