In a sea of Sabbath-worship, it can be hard to stand out. But The Atomic Bitchwax has done just that.
The New Jersey-based trio known for rising above myriad other riff wranglers is bringing its heavy psychedelic rock to San Antonio’s Paper Tiger this Saturday. Atlanta’s Royal Thunder will open the evening.
Formed in 1992, The Atomic Bitchwax is essentially a Monster Magnet side project considering everyone is a current or former member of the stoner-rock stalwart. A staple of the ’90s grunge and grunge-adjacent ecosystem, Monster Magnet toured with Soundgarden, Aerosmith, Metallica, Hole, Marilyn Manson and more. Its videos have also racked up tens of millions of views on YouTube.
However, TAB incorporates more prog and psychedelic elements into its sound than Monster Magnet — all while frequently packing an even harder sonic punch. The band also gives itself more room to stretch out experimentally, as it did on the 2011 album The Local Fuzz, which consists of a 42-minute track of back-to-back riffs.
The Atomic Bitchwax’s music has been featured on TV programs ranging from Jackass to Fox Sports broadcasts.
The Atomic Bitchwax is performing at the Paper Tiger the day after Jack White’s sold-out surprise show, and the energy — and elbow room — are likely to stand in stark difference. So is the ticket price, which at $18 is a bargain compared to White’s $101.90.
$18, 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, Paper Tiger, 2410 N. St. Mary’s St., papertigersatx.com.
