The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), working in conjunction with other local and federal law-enforcement agencies, arrested San Antonio-area man Nathan James Henderson on accusations that he collected explosive components and planned to carry out a racist attack.
Authorities took the 39-year-old Henderson into custody roughly three weeks ago. However, BCSO officials didn’t reveal details of the bust until late last week, when they filed additional charges against the suspect.
Henderson now faces charges of terrorism under state law, which is a first-degree felony with a penalty of 5 to 99 years or life in prison. He also faces charges that he possessed explosive components, prohibited weapons and hoax bombs.
Working with the the ATF, the San Antonio Police Department Bomb Squad and the Bexar County Fire Marshall’s Office, Bexar deputies followed up on what the office called a “credible tip involving threats of mass violence and possession of illegal explosive components.” In a statement, BCSO officials said Henderson reportedly threatened to commit violence against people based on their race, religion and “government affiliation.”
A search of the suspect’s home in a subdivision east of Camp Bullis turned up firearms and ammunition, 24 grenades, chemicals and components often used to make improvised explosives, an igniter capable of remotely detonating a bomb and nearly 100 metal cylinders likely intended for producing blasting caps, according to BCSO. Law enforcement also turned up notebooks containing extremist ideology and “vague plans to disrupt public venues,” authorities added.
Some of the grenades had been partially modified, followup analysis by SAPD and the Fire Marshall’s office revealed, BCSO said in its statement.
“Ultimately, all hazardous materials were secured, and Henderson was taken into custody without incident,” officials with the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “He faces multiple charges, including components of explosives, prohibited weapons, hoax bombs and terrorism — marking the first time BCSO has filed a terrorism charge under Texas’s newly enacted state law.”
