Two-term District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez this week revealed he’ll run for a final term representing his East Side district.

This will be the councilman’s final term in office due to term limits. San Antonio council members can serve a total of 8 years in office. McKee-Rodriguez has already served four of those years and, as decided in November’s election, the new term length for San Antonio city council members is four years instead of two.

In a Facebook announcement, the councilman touted his accomplishments during his four years in office. Those include championing abortion travel, affordable housing, prioritizing mental health services and other initiatives to support underserved communities.

The councilman also led the charge to get horse-drawn carriages off downtown streets and fought for increased funding and oversight for Animal Care Services.

The post goes on to state that McKee-Rodriguez also secured millions in funding for revitalizing parks in his East Side district and a record-breaking $80 million in infrastructure improvements including sidewalks, pothole repairs, street lights and drainage.

The councilman also recently unveiled two revitalized murals over the North New Braunfels bridge in his district, one of which honors civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

“For nearly three decades, art above the N. New Braunfels bridge has welcomed people into the Eastside, fading over time,” a Facebook post from McKee-Rodriguez on the murals reads. “For years residents have asked for updated artwork. Finally we are happy to welcome two new pieces to our community!”

San Antonio’s next city election is May 3. Residents will also vote on the Alamo City’s next mayor.
