After last year tumbling from Travel + Leisure’s annual list of the top 10 U.S. cities most worth visiting — a space it had held since 2020 — San Antonio slid even further in the latest version of the magazine’s reader-driven rankings.
This year, the Alamo City found itself in the No. 14 spot.
This time around, Travel + Leisure readers ranked Fort Worth — the city where the West begins — as Texas’ top-rated travel destination, placing at No. 6 on the list. Readers praised Cowtown’s authentic Western feel, historic Stockyards, annual rodeo, and recently revitalized Cultural District.
“Fort Worth is a rare place that proudly channels the spirit of the American West,” the publication wrote.
San Antonio’s drop to the list’s No. 14 spot comes as the Alamo City, despite a reported bump from the Spurs’ playoff run, is struggling to fill hotel rooms and reach pre-pandemic levels.
For the past 30 years, Travel + Leisure readers worldwide have cast ballots to rank the best destinations, hotels, airlines, cruise lines and travel experiences based on metrics including food, shopping, culture and more. Nearly 700,000 ballots were cast this year, according to the magazine.
Also of interest to San Antonians, the Pearl’s highly regarded Hotel Emma also slipped from Travel + Leisure’s Best U.S. Hotels list. Even so, the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa on the city’s far North Side did make it as Travel + Leisure’s No. 5 best resort in Texas.
