A downtown San Antonio bar once memorialized in a book rounding up a dozen Texas dive bars that embody the state’s drinking culture has closed its doors, online news site MySA reports.
A sign reading “Bar closed until further notice” now hangs on the front door of Texas T Pub, a colorful 40-year-old watering hole at 121 Broadway. The dimly lit drinking spot was included in the 2022 book Texas Dives: Enduring Neighborhood Bars of the Lone Star State largely on the basis of its colorful neon signs and equally colorful clientele.
MySA reports that it tried to phone Texas T’s owner for more information but got no answer. Further, an online obituary shows the dive’s longtime manager, Terry Loera, died earlier this spring.
While Texas T Pub wasn’t fancy, it was popular with downtown service workers and was known for its welcoming atmosphere and homespun ambiance.
“It was one of those bars that was inviting and had immediate appeal and was incredibly photogenic,” Kirk Weddle, one of the authors of Texas Dives told the Express-News while promoting the book. “I mean, it checked off all the list for what we were looking for.”
