San Antonio music legend George Strait will receive the Country Music Awards’ Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award during the group’s annual ceremony in Nashville next week.
One of the highest honors in country music, the award recognizes those who have “attained the highest degree of recognition” in the genre, according to the CMA website.
Few would argue that Strait has done just that. The singer-songwriter has sold more than 70 million albums, earned 44 No. 1 Billboard country hits and ranks just behind Elvis Presley and the Beatles for having the most gold- and platinum-certified albums, according to the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The recognition at next week’s CMA Awards is just the latest in a year of major accomplishments for the music icon known as the “King of Country.”
In June, Strait set a record for the largest concert audience in U.S. history after drawing more than 110,000 fans to Kyle Field in College Station. That same month, he was enshrined on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The CMA Awards will air at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20 on ABC.
