Texas Democrat Colin Allred outraises Ted Cruz as campaign heads into home stretch

Democrat Colin Allred outraised Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz in the third quarter for what’s emerged as one of the most hotly contested races in the upper chamber.

Allred pulled in a whopping $30 million in the past three months, compared to Cruz’s $21 million, according to campaign filings. Even so, Cruz reported having $16 million cash on hand, while Allred’s campaign didn’t report what it currently has in the bank.

The fundraising report comes four weeks before Election Day and follows disappointing news for the Cruz camp.

Last week, high-profile Republicans including outspoken Trump critic and former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, former U.S. Rep. and former Dallas Mayor Steve Bartlett and Texas House Elections Committee Chairman Todd Smith launched the Republicans for Allred coalition.

A series of recent polls also show Allred ahead, narrowly behind or within the margin of error of Cruz.

The most recent polling released by Florida Atlantic University and conducted by Mainstreet Research on Tuesday reported that Cruz led Allred by 3 percentage points. However, of the 811 registered Texas voters surveyed, 11% said they remain undecided.

What could be weighing on voter’s minds is Texas’ controversial abortion ban, which 65% of Texas Latino voters said they oppose, according to a separate UnidosUS poll released last month.

Cruz has been noticeably silent on the issue, avoiding questions regarding his stance on the issue when asked by the Texas Tribune, according to a recent report.
